Did you know before people started carving pumpkin for Halloween, people carved turnips? It's true - especially in Ireland. During Samhain (which coincides with Halloween), the people would carve turnips into little lanterns with faces on them to ward off the evil spirits that appeared when the veil between the living and the dead was thinnest - the night of Samhain.
The face of these turnip earrings, however, would be more likely to attract the evil spirits than repel them. I based this turnip's mug after Peter Paul Rubens' drawing of his daughter Clara Serena, who was one of 15th century Spanish Queen Isabella's ladies in waiting.
Wear these earrings to either attract or repel spirits this spooky season, or just as a tribute to the humble turnip.
A few details:
- These turnip earrings come in 2 sizes: the large measure about 3.5 inches from top of the leaf to the bottom of the root; the small are about 2.5 inches.
- The earring posts are titanium, which is nickel free and safe for most people with skin sensitivities.
- Despite their size, they are very lightweight.
